asked the Minister of Agriculture what was the amount of subsidy paid in the beet-sugar industry in the 12 months ended 31st December, 1931; and what was the quantity of sugar produced, the number of persons employed, and the period in man-weeks for which employment was given?

As the calendar year 1931 includes parts of the 1930–31 and 1931–32 manufacturing campaigns, it would be convenient to furnish the desired information in respect of each of these campaign periods. The information is somewhat detailed and. with the hon. Member's permission, I will circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

My right hon. Friend's attention has been called to the case. This girl was not certified as mentally defective nor regarded as subject to be dealt with under the Mental Deficiency Act. There is no evidence that other persons are being detained by the same people. All premises certified for the reception of mental defectives are regularly inspected by the Board of Control.

Was any local authority originally responsible for sending this girl, or any other inmate, to this house?

Will the inquiries made cover the question whether this house has been used for some time for the reception of people of this sort?
