HC Deb 13 December 1932 vol 273 cc194-5
52. Mr. PARKINSON

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the amount of money lying in the Bank of England known as unclaimed bank balances on the 31st March, 1932?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

The Bank of England in relation to its private customers is in the same position as any other bank, and I have no information respecting the accounts of those customers.

Mr. THORNE

Does the hon. Gentleman not think it is time now that these unclaimed balances held by the Bank were handed over to the State?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

A Select Committee of this House in 1919 did review this question and came to the conclusion that these balances were of no great concern.
