§ 47. Mr. T. WILLIAMSasked the Minister of Agriculture whether his attention has been called to the decision of the Norfolk Farmers' Union instructing all farmers to give notice to all workmen except essential key men not later than 1st January, 1933; and, if so, will he state what action he proposes, if any, to protect farm workers and their families from becoming chargeable to the rates?
§ Major ELLIOTI have seen in the Press that a resolution has been passed to the effect described in the hon. Member's question, but I have no official knowledge of it, nor am I in a position to estimate what effect it is likely to have. In the circumstances I have no statement to make in reply to the last part of the question.
§ Mr. WILLIAMSDoes not the right hon. and gallant Gentleman think, in view of what the National Government have done for agriculture, that the Farmers' Union of Norfolk ought to be prosecuted for intimidation?
§ Major ELLIOTI can only say that I hope that wiser counsels will prevail in this situation, but I am anxious not to say anything which will embitter it.
§ Mr. HICKSHas not the Minister obtained information through his representatives what happens on these committees
§ Major ELLIOTThis is a decision of the Farmers' Union, not of the wages committee.
