HC Deb 28 April 1932 vol 265 cc557-8
24. Sir WILLIAM WAYLAND

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total amount of revenue received up to 31st March from the taxation of beer since the imposition of the additional 31s. 6d. per barrel in 1931, and the total amount received during the same period in 1930–31?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Major Elliot)

The total revenue received up to 31st March last from beer in respect of which Excise duty was charged at the increased rate was £32,085,000. I regret that no figure is available for the corresponding period in 1930–31, since payments in respect of brewings during the month of September, 1930, cannot be split into the periods before and after 11th September, whereas September, 1931, was automatically split by the change in the rate of duty.

25. Captain SOTHERON-ESTCOURT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will consider an alteration in the law making it compulsory for the brewers to state the gravity of their products when sold to the public?

Major ELLIOT

I do not think that this matter is within the province of the Treasury.
