HC Deb 28 April 1932 vol 265 cc563-4
38. Captain PETER MACDONALD

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in connection with the recent raising of additional capital by the Agricultural Mortgage Corporation, he can state what steps it is intended to take to revive the interest of farmers in the facilities made available to them by this corporation?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I understand that the Agricultural Mortgage Corporation continues to receive applications for loans which each week amount in aggregate to considerable sums of money. The facilities offered by the corporation appear to be well known to farmers and I see no reason for taking the action suggested by my hon. and gallant Friend.

Captain MACDONALD

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that British farmers are finding it very difficult to obtain loans from the banks, who seem very reluctant to operate this Act?

Sir J. GILMOUR

My hon. and gallant Friend is referring to short-term loans, which are a matter for the joint stock banks.
