HC Deb 27 April 1932 vol 265 c357
19. Captain CAZALET

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can give the House any information as to whether the Government of Northern Rhodesia has yet finally decided upon the location of its new capital?

Sir P. CUNUFFE-LISTER

The Government of Northern Rhodesia decided on Lusaka as the site of the new capital.

Captain CAZALET

In the interests of economy, will the right hon. Gentleman suggest to the Governor the postponement of the building of this new capital for the time being?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

That requires very careful consideration. I have sanctioned a certain amount of work which had been arranged for; but the rate of progress must obviously depend on financial conditions. There are many difficulties in having a capital so close to the border and there is general agreement as to the need of a change.
