HC Deb 25 April 1932 vol 265 c34
76. Mr. BATEY

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of persons holding less than £l,000 in British Government securities, the number between £1,000 and £5,000, and the number beyond that figure?

Major ELLIOT

I regret that it is not practicable to supply this information in view of the disproportionate amount of time and labour involved. An inquiry in 1929 showed that for the 5 per cent. War Loan there were approximately 2,500,000 holdings of £1,000 or under. The number of holdings of Savings Certificates (all under £1,000) is estimated at roughly 10,000,000.

Sir A. M. SAMUEL

Of what use is that picture in view of the fact that one single insurance company holds £50,000,000 of British securities on behalf of 10,000,000 policy holders?
