9. Major MILLSasked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to difficulties which county police authorities are experiencing in giving effect to that part of his circular letter of 9th October, 1931, to police authorities which dealt with the question of replacing police employed on point duty by the use of automatic traffic signals; and whether he will help county police authorities who desire to carry out the economy indicated by that circular letter?
§ Sir H. SAMUELI understand that my hon. and gallant Friend has in mind cases in the county with which he is connected. I am informed that various proposals have been under technical examination by the local authority and by the Ministry of Transport, and that my hon. Friend will shortly be in a position to approve certain installations for a grant from the Road Fund. In view of the important effect of these signals on traffic it is essential that they should be correctly sited and of a type suitably adapted for the traffic conditions they are intended to meet.
