asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the question of the deletion of Article 16 of the Covenant of the League of Nations has been raised either at Geneva or in discussion with the American representative with a view to getting American assistance by abolishing the disputable sanctions?

Mr. EDEN

No, Sir. The revision of the Covenant is not under discussion at Geneva.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the hon. Member aware that, according to a Press report, the matter has been under discussion privately, and will he let us know if that is so, as distinct from public discussion?

Mr. EDEN

I have seen the Press report, but I am afraid that I can add nothing to the answer that I have given.

Mr. MANDER

Will my hon. Friend give any encouragement to a proposal of this kind?
