asked the First Commissioner of Works whether, as soon as the demands of national economy permit, he will arrange to have the Westminster crypt chapel inspected with a view to its clearance of disfigurements and its restoration to a condition worthy of its artistic and historic significance?

The chapel of St. Mary Undercroft has been recently inspected, but I am not sure what are the particular disfigurements to which my hon. Friend refers. In any case the chapel was very largely restored after the fire of 1834 and, in any changes, it would be difficult to distinguish between the mediæval and the Victorian work. Further, the removal of the present decoration would, I feel sure, be regretted by many. In the circumstances, I do not feel able to adopt my hon. Friend's suggestion.
