HC Deb 29 September 1931 vol 257 c198
27. Major NATHAN

asked the Minister of Labour the number of unemployed men, women and juveniles in Bethnal Green at any convenient date in July, August and September, 1928, 1929, 1930 and 1931, respectively?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Sir Henry Betterton)

As the reply includes a table of figures I will, if I may, circulate a statement in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the statement:

Mr. EDE

In view of the large number of unemployed in this district and the large proportion of them who are capable of doing this skilled work and the work in tidal waters, will the Minister of Labour see if overtime cannot be entirely stopped on this scheme?

Sir H. BETTERTON

In the answer sent to the hon. Member it is stated that instructions have been issued to watch this matter closely and to report at once if there is any real need for the engagement of any man over the normal hours. I will see that the point put by the hon. Member is borne carefully in mind.
