HC Deb 28 September 1931 vol 257 cc22-3
27. Mr. EDE

asked the Minister of Agriculture if his attention has been directed to the difficulty of collecting tithe and the unpopularity with which legal action for its recovery is covered; and what action he proposes to afford relief to the tithe payers?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I cannot undertake to introduce legislation relieving landowners of the liability of their property to tithe rentcharge.

Mr. EDE

Has the right hon. Gentleman noticed the difficulties which arose last week; and does not he think that in the present inflamed state of public opinion in industrial districts it is a bad job to set such an example?
