HC Deb 28 September 1931 vol 257 cc26-7
34. Mr. MILLS

asked the Minister of Health whether any reports have been received from his factory inspectors as to preventible nuisance emanating from the cement factories on the banks of the Thames in Essex and Kent; and whether the investigation of continental improvements designed to prevent effluent has been completed?

Mr. SIMON

The reports of the Alkali Inspectors of my Department show that some progress has been made in reducing the emission of dust, though that progress has been slower than it would probably have been had trade conditions been better. No recent complaints have been received. No continental investigation of the kind indicated in the question is being made.

Mr. MILLS

Will the Minister of Health confer with the President of the Board of Trade to see whether the Board of Trade has undertaken any inquiries; and, with regard to the question of nuisances, has he not received complaints from horticultural associations in Kent?

Mr. SIMON

No complaint has been received in recent months. I will have inquiries made as to whether the Board of Trade has any information.
