HC Deb 23 September 1931 vol 256 cc1628-9
20. Mr. BROCKWAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the placing of sealed armouries in various parts of Palestine has created a tense situation in Palestine, leading to a strike throughout the country on 23rd August; and whether he will state the number of armouries established, the names of the places in which these armouries are located, and what is the armament what they contain?

Mr. THOMAS

I am aware that there have been protests against the decision, which was taken as long ago as April, 1930, to re-establish sealed armouries in Jewish colonies. These protests led to some local excitement about a month ago, but the situation was handled effectively by the Palestine Government and is now described as quiet.
