HC Deb 30 November 1931 vol 260 c758
56. Major MILNER

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is taking any active steps to encourage applications or proposals to set up boards under the Agricultural Marketing Act; whether any such proposals have been made; and will he give particulars and say what action he is taking thereon?

Sir J. GILMOUR

My Department has published an Orange Book on the Act, with a view to informing agriculturists and others of its scope and possibilities. Discussions on the Act are, I understand, taking place in various parts of the country, and at some of these the Ministry, by request, has been represented. No proposals under the Act have yet been submitted by the industry.

Major MILNER

Are we to understand that the right hon. Gentleman is anxious to work this Act?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am quite prepared to try and work parts of the Act; and the only point I would emphasise is the question of the problem of cost.
