HC Deb 30 November 1931 vol 260 cc745-6
73. Mr. SUTCLIFFE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in the interests of the Lancashire cotton industry, he proposes to take any steps to improve the trade in cotton goods with India?

Major COLVILLE

My hon. Friend may rest assured that His Majesty's Government is aware of the situation in regard to our trade with India and will take all desirable steps that lie within its power to increase the trade of the United Kingdom. In this connection I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member for Stockport (Mr. Hammersley) on 19th November, 1931, a copy of which I am sending to him.

Mr. REMER

Will the hon. and gallant Gentleman consider making representations to the Indian Government for putting a higher duty on foreign cloth than that charged on British cloth?

Major COLVILLE

That is a matter which does not fall under my Department.
