HC Deb 26 November 1931 vol 260 cc480-1
6. Mr. LECKIE

asked the Minister of Labour when the Royal Commission on Unemployment Insurance is expected to conclude its labours; and whether he will request the Commission to present another interim report dealing with the more urgent matters referred to it?

Sir H. BETTERTON

On the first part of the question, I cannot add anything to the reply given to the hon. Member for Lewisham (Sir A. Pownall) on 19th November. The Commission dealt with the more urgent matters of their reference in their interim report, and there is no occasion to ask them for a further interim report, even if it were reasonable to do so.

Mr. MAXTON

Will not the right hon. Gentleman consider putting an end to the labours of this Commission altogether?

Sir H. BETTERTON

No, Sir. I expect very valuable results from their conclusions.

Mr. HOROBIN

Will the Minister consider the advisability of giving effect to the suggestions which have already been made by the Royal Commission which were not included in the Anomalies Bill passed by the late Government?

Sir H. BETTERTON

Some of the proposals made by the Royal Commission have already been considered, and it will be very much better if we wait until we get the final report.
