HC Deb 23 November 1931 vol 260 c38
45. Mr. BRACKEN

asked the Prime Minister whether His Majesty's Government will consider the granting of allowances for expenses to His Majesty's judges on a scale comparable with those granted to Ambassadors and other members of the diplomatic service?

The PRIME MINISTER

I can see no basis for comparison between the duties and allowances of judges and Ambassadors?

Mr. BRACKEN

Does the right hon. Gentleman not comprehend that His Majesty's judges have to spend considerable sums in order to maintain a proper standard of life, and that the judges are scandalously underpaid Will the Prime Minister investigate this matter, and perhaps appoint an official commission of inquiry which might produce some useful results?

The PRIME MINISTER

We are all, unfortunately, in that position.

Mr. MORGAN JONES

Did not the hon. Member for North Paddington (Mr. Bracken) support a reduction in the standard of life of the unemployed?
