§ 28. Mr. FLANAGANasked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department if the imports of British goods into France, and, if so, which, show any appreciable increase since the abandonment by this country of the Gold Standard; and of which commodities will be most affected by the new French sur-tax?
§ Major COLVILLE (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)Statistics of total United Kingdom exports to France are not yet available for a period subsequent to this country's leaving the Gold Standard. Information as to exports of certain commodities from the United Kingdom to France will be found in the 24 Monthly Accounts of Trade and Navigation for October and earlier months. They show in certain cases an increase in quantities in October as against September, but in general the increase is not disproportionate to that shown in the same period last year and the year before. As regards the effects of the French sur-tax on United Kingdom goods, I would refer the hon. Member to my answer to a question asked by the right hon. Member for South Molton (Mr. Lambert) on the 18th November. I am sending him a copy.
