HC Deb 18 November 1931 vol 259 c838
23. Viscountess ASTOR

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to the restrictions which are to be applied to fresh fish exported from British fishing ports to France; and whether it is the intention of the Government to take steps to protect the interests of the British fishing industry?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Sir John Gilmour)

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, the interests of the British fishing industry is one of the subjects for review in connection with the consideration by the Government of the general economic situation.

Viscountess ASTOR

In the meantime could the right hon. Gentleman consider giving priority to the British fishing industry, to sell their fish in our home markets? That is not Protection.

Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGE

When will any decision be taken on this matter?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I could not give any definite answer to that question.
