HC Deb 18 November 1931 vol 259 c847
36. Captain BARTON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the fact that the increased taxation on beer in the emergency Budget, put on for revenue purposes, is not achieving its object, but has resulted in unemployment by reduction of staffs, it is proposed to take it off?

Major ELLIOT

I would refer to the reply given yesterday to my hon. Friend the Member for Portsmouth, North (Sir B. Falle). It would be premature at present to draw any conclusion as to the result of the increase in duty.

Viscountess ASTOR

Is it not true that unemployment is far greater in other trades which have made no profits in the last five years?
