HC Deb 16 November 1931 vol 259 c478
8. Mr. SMITHERS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether it is now the intention of His Majesty's Government to exercise their right to terminate the present trade agreement between Great Britain and Soviet Russia at six months' notice?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

It would be premature for me to make any statement at present on a matter of this kind while the wider question of our trade balance is under consideration.

Mr. SMITHERS

Can my hon. Friend say whether it is the policy of His Majesty's Government to make the continuance of the trade agreement conditional on the settlement of debts and claims through committees and sub-committees?

Mr. EDEN

I do not think that I can add anything to my answer, except that, as to the debt question, there is another question on the Paper.

Colonel GRETTON

Can my hon. Friend say whether an authentic copy of the trade agreement is to be obtained?

Mr. EDEN

I will see that a copy is sent to the right hon. Gentleman.
