asked the Postmaster-General the amounts of deposits and withdrawals from the Post Office Savings Bank for each of the four weeks in October and the first week in November, 1930 and 1931, respectively?

As the answer contains a number of figures, I will, with the hon. Member's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT. If the hon. Member has any particular figures in mind,, I shall be glad if he will let me know.

Can the Postmaster-General, without going into details, give the material facts?

Sir K. WOOD

I will give the hon. Member some figures which I think will be satisfactory for his purpose. For the week ending 18th October, 1930, the deposits were £1,360,000, and for the same period, 1931, the deposits were £1,100,000. As far as the withdrawals are concerned, for the same period in 1930 the withdrawals were £1,334,000, and in 1931 £1,474,000. To take another week, for the week ending 1st Novem- ber, 1930, the deposits were £1,700,000, and in 1931 £1,118,000. The withdrawals for the same period were £1,223,000 in 1930 and £1,519,000 in 1931.

May I ask whether these figures indicate any departure from precedent laid down by the previous Administration?
