HC Deb 12 November 1931 vol 259 cc268-9
52. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the position with regard to the dispute between China and Japan in Manchuria?

53. Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the latest information he has available as to conditions generally in China, and particularly as to the military operations being carried on between the Chinese and Japanese in Manchuria?

Mr. EDEN

I would refer my hon. Friends to the statement made yesterday by the Foreign Secretary. I may, however, add that, so far as my information goes, the fighting which was taking place in the neighbourhood of the Nonni River Bridge in North-Western Manchuria has now ceased. With regard to conditions in South and Central China, the Cantonese forces, which advanced against Nanking in September, have been withdrawn, and no hostilities are now in progress. Negotiations have been initiated at Shanghai and, so far as I am aware, are still continuing.

Mr. COCKS

Can the Under-Secretary say whether he has any information regarding the setting up of a new authority in Manchuria?

Mr. EDEN

I should like notice of that question.
