HC Deb 19 May 1931 vol 252 c1769
40. Major THOMAS

asked the Secretary for Mines whether the Government have yet come to any decision with regard to the operation of the seven-hour day after 8th July?

44. Mr. SMITHERS

asked the Secretary for Mines what is the policy of the Government on the question of the return to the seven hours working day in the mines in July?

Mr. SHINWELL

Discussions between the Government and the Mining Association and the Miners' Federation are still proceeding, and there is nothing yet to add to the answer given by the Prime Minister to the hon. Member for the Chislehurst Division (Mr. Smithers) on the 12th May.

Mr. SMITHERS

Is it not a fact that a return to the seven-hour day will put the coal export trade out of business?
