HC Deb 19 May 1931 vol 252 c1767
37. Major BEAUMONT THOMAS

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he will review the position of the Miners' Welfare Fund, with the object of reducing the contribution of 1d. per ton, which is a burden on the industry?

Mr. SHINWELL

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the announcement I made in this House last week, during the Debate on the Third Reading of the Mining Industry (Welfare Fund) Bill, that I am setting up a special committee, under the chairmanship of Lord Chelmsford, to review the work of the fund fully, with special reference to the amount and duration of the welfare levy, and to make recommendations.

Mr. MARLEY

Will my hon. Friend consider reducing the royalties, which are a very much heavier burden on the industry?
