HC Deb 13 May 1931 vol 252 cc1183-4
56. Sir C. CAYZER

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cases have yet occurred where motorists who have overlooked by a few days the need for taking out new motor driving licences have been convicted; and in how many such cases have they been suspended from driving for 12 months?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Short)

Statistics of proceedings under the recent Act are not yet available, and even if they were it would not be practicable to distinguish the cases of nonrenewal of licences that were due to pure oversight, and to say in how many of them the licence was suspended for 12 months.

Sir C. CAYZER

Is the hon. Gentleman not aware that some magistrates are under the impression that, under the terms of the Road Traffic Act, they have no option but to suspend licences for this trivial offence, and can he not take some steps to rectify that impression?

Mr. SHORT

That has nothing to do with the question on the Paper.
