HC Deb 12 May 1931 vol 252 cc967-8
18. Mr. MANDER

asked the President of the Board of Trade the names of the countries which have accepted definitely an invitation to negotiate individually for tariff reductions; what progress has been made; and when the next meetings of the negotiators are to take place?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

Seven countries, namely, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Switzerland indicated their willingness to consider proposals for tariff reductions with a view to the possible opening of negotiations, and proposals on behalf of His Majesty's Government have been put forward accordingly. Detailed negotiations have not yet been started.

Mr. MANDER

In connection with those negotiations, will the right hon. Gentleman endeavour to commit this country for as long a period as possible to a policy of Free Trade?
