HC Deb 05 May 1931 vol 252 cc179-80
5. Mr. RAMSBOTHAM

asked the Secretary of State for War what steps have been taken during the past 12 months to ensure that all potatoes supplied for the Army in Great Britain have been home-grown?

Mr. SHAW

Apart from supplies for hospitals, detention barracks and the two military boys' schools, which supplies are relatively very small and mainly obtained from local greengrocers, potatoes are not purchased by the War Department, but are obtained by units from the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes. I am informed that, apart from early potatoes from abroad and a few cases where home-grown potatoes are too expensive, the institutes obtain their whole supply from home sources.
