HC Deb 12 March 1931 vol 249 cc1358-9
67. Mr. LEES

asked the Minister of Health how many of the enumerators who have been appointed for the forthcoming taking of the Census in the town of Belper have been drawn from the unemployed signing on at the Belper Employment Exchange?

The MINISTER of HEALTH (Mr. Arthur Greenwood)

I understand that my hon. Friend has written to the Parliamentary Secretary about this ease and that she sent to him, last night, a full statement of the facts.

Mr. LEES

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman to reply to my question, as to how many individuals have been taken from the Employment Exchange for this work?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I am not sure whether the hon. Member means at Belper or generally; and in either case I am afraid that I could not tell him.

Mr. LEES

May I draw his attention to the fact that I have asked the question as to how many have been drawn from the unemployed signing on at the Employment Exchange?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I understand that the Belper Registrar appointed the men before the circular was sent to him from the Ministry of Health. I believe two unemployed have been appointed, though not from the Employment Exchange.

Mr. LEES

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the circular, which I understand is an appeal to Registrar to try and get men from the Employment Exchange, has never been acted upon in the town of Belper? May I ask for a reply on this point, bearing in mind the fact that the officials appointed are full-time salaried officials?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I have already told the hon. Member that these appointments were made before the circular was issued.
