asked the Secretary for Mines the average cost per ton of coal raised for timbering the coal mines of Great Britain; and the total cost for the years 1928 and 1929?

Mr. SHINWELL

In 1928 the estimated total cost of timber and pit wood consumed at coal mines in Great Britain was approximately £8¼ millions, an average cost of 8¼d. per ton of saleable coal raised. The corresponding figures in 1929 were £8⅔ millions and 8d.
