HC Deb 09 March 1931 vol 249 c788
22. Mr. HANNON

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to what, extent the recent decision of the House of Representatives at Washington that the United States should prohibit foreign immigration for two years will affect emigration from Great Britain and Ireland and from British Dominions and Colonies; and if he proposes to make any representations through diplomatic channels far a modification of those restrictions in favour of the British Empire?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Dalton)

A Bill for the further restriction of immigration to the United States recently passed the House of Representatives, but had not been brought before the Senate when Congress adjourned on the 4th March.

Mr. HANNON

Have any representations been made through diplomatic channels with a view to safeguarding the interests of Canada and other parts of the British Empire as affected by this decision of the United States?

Mr. DALTON

I think it would be rather unusual to make representations at this stage, when, as I have already pointed out, the Bill has not been brought before the Senate. I am sure that my right hon. Friend will, naturally, watch the matter from the point of view indicated by the hon. Member.
