HC Deb 09 March 1931 vol 249 cc800-1
49. Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the Prime Minister if he can state the name of the chairman of the Economy Committee; and when it is expected that they will begin their deliberations?

51. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Prime Minister whether the new Economy Committee will inquire into the expenditure of the three Fighting Services; and whether the committee will have the assistance of experts?

The PRIME MINISTER

I hope before long to make a statement about this committee, but am not yet in a position to do so.

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Has the selection of the Chairman been made or not?

The PRIME MINISTER

That part of the answer will be given when the full answer is given.

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

That is the question on the Paper. Is it not the right of a private Member to have an answer?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is very inconvenient and difficult to give a partial statement. They are working very hard on it. No time is being lost. I propose to make a complete announcement at the earliest date.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Will the statement contain the information I have asked for?

The PRIME MINISTER

The terms of reference will cover that point.

Mr. MILLAR

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware of the extreme urgency of the question? Is he not able to state approximately when he will be able to reply to a question if placed upon the Paper?

The PRIME MINISTER

I cannot. It depends on matters over which I have no control, but which I am trying to bring under control as quickly as possible.
