asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what proportion of the revenue of the Crown Colonies, of the Straits Settlements, the Federated Malay States, North Borneo, and Brunei was derived from opium in the last year for which statistics are available.

Dr. SHIELS

Approximate statistics relating to 1930 are available in respect of the Straits Settlements, the Federated Malay States and Brunei. The percentage of opium revenue to total revenue was approximately:

Straits Settlements 26.3
Federated Malay States 14.9
Brunei 15.9

The percentage in North Borneo in 1929 was 16.7.
