HC Deb 29 June 1931 vol 254 cc887-8
52. Mr. DAY

asked the President of the Board of Education whether his attention has been called to the conditions existing in many private schools; and whether he will consider the introduction of legislation giving local authorities power to licence schools?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Morgan Jones)

A departmental committee was appointed last December to survey the present position of schools not in receipt of grants from public funds, and to consider what legislative or other changes are desirable for the purpose of securing that children attending such schools receive an adequate education under suitable conditions. My right hon. Friend does not propose to take any action in the matter until he has had an opportunity of considering the committee's report.

Mr. DAY

Can my hon. Friend say whether a more explanatory answer will be given, and whether a report will be published?

Mr. JONES

I have done my best to give as full a reply as possible.
