HC Deb 25 June 1931 vol 254 c599
23. Mr. DAY

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of recent happenings in connection with sweepstakes organised in Ireland, and the extensive public interest taken in them, he will now consider whether a full inquiry should be instituted as to whether the existing law governing sweepstakes and lotteries should either be strengthened or relaxed?

Mr. CLYNES

I have received no further information which would enable me to add anything to the answers which I have previously given on this question.

Mr. DAY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the present situation is bringing the law into ridicule, especially in view of recent decisions?

Mr. CLYNES

I admit that there is dissatisfaction, but it does not necessarily follow that an inquiry will improve the position.
