asked the Secretary for Mines how many fatal accidents occurred in coal mines in Great Britain during the first three months of 1931, as compared with the first three months of 1929?
§ Mr. SHINWELL
During the first quarter of 1931, 226 persons were killed by accidents in and about mines under the Coal Mines Act, as compared with 274 during the first quarter of 1929.
§ Mr. LAWTHER
Will my hon. Friend, having regard to the fact that the figures show fewer lives lost with a decrease in hours, formulate his policy on similar lines of shorter hours?
