HC Deb 18 June 1931 vol 253 cc1919-20
5. Mr. PRICE

asked the Minister of Labour whether she is aware that a condition of 75 per cent. of ex-service men is demanded for work on Government-assisted schemes in the Whitehaven and Cleator Moor areas of Cumberland; and whether she can see her way to reduce this required percentage?

Miss BONDFIELD

The Unemployment Grants Committee have power in appropriate cases to authorise a reduction in the percentage of ex-service men to be employed on approved schemes, and have in fact done so for schemes promoted in the areas of the Cleator Moor Urban District Council and the Whitehaven Rural District Council.

Mr. PRICE

Is the right hon. Lady aware that in the mining areas of Cumberland there is a large number of men who were working in the mines during the War and that, in consequence, there is a very small number of ex-servicemen in that area and it is very difficult to obtain the percentage?

Miss BONDFIELD

Yes, I have explained that in fact such reductions in these percentages have been made in these two schemes.
