HC Deb 16 June 1931 vol 253 cc1605-6
20. Mr. LOCKWOOD

asked the President of the Board of Trade if his attention has been called to the fact that the Italian Government is subsidising wool textile goods imported into this country; and whether, in view of that fact and that such goods are produced under conditions of work and at rates of wages not operating in this country, he will take legislative steps to stop such dumping, which has a detrimental effect both upon trade and employment in this country?

Mr. W. R. SMITH

I understand that the Italian Government accords to manufacturers in respect of exported goods certain assistance or privileges, but I have no information as to the particular application of such measures to woollen textiles exported from Italy to this country. I have noted the suggestion made in the last part of the question.

Mr. LOCKWOOD

Is the President of the Board of Trade aware that the whole of the manufacturers in the West Riding have definite knowledge of these subsidies? In view of the state of unemployment in the wool textile trade, and the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I propose to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

Mr. BECKETT

Mr. SPEAKER

The matter will be raised on Adjournment.
