HC Deb 15 June 1931 vol 253 c1404
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can make any further statement as to the progress made in the Indianisation of the Indian Army?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Wedgwood Benn)

I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of the reply I gave on this subject to the hon. Member for the University of Oxford (Sir C. Oman) on the 8th June.

Mr. DAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how many officers will be required when this takes effect?

Mr. BENN

I am not quite clear as to whether the hon. Member refers to what is going on under the existing policy or under the new policy after the report of the inquiry which is now proceeding has been received. I am replying on the basis of existing policy.

Sir CHARLES OMAN

Will an opportunity be given to the House before long to discuss this scheme?

Mr. BENN

That is a matter of business, which depends upon communications between the parties.
