§ 28. Mr. HANNONasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is in a position to make a statement to the House on the progress of the negotiations for a naval understanding between Italy and France?
Mr. A. HENDERSONI have nothing to add to the reply which I returned on Wednesday last to the right hon. Gentleman, the Member for West Woolwich (Sir K. Wood).
§ Mr. HANNONCan the right hon. Gentleman say when I may put down a question to which he will be able to give a definite answer?
Mr. HENDERSONNo, I am afraid I cannot. The matter does not rest with His Majesty's Government. There are two other Governments concerned. One of them, as the hon. Gentleman knows, has been passing through a very important election, that of the President of the French Republic, and that has affected the negotiations.
§ Captain CROOKSHANKDid not the right hon. Gentleman, who now disclaims 605 all responsibility, try to claim all the gratification for what he called the success in regard to this matter?
Mr. HENDERSONThe hon. and gallant Member is not making an accurate statement when he says that I disclaim all responsibility. I never do that.
