HC Deb 29 July 1931 vol 255 c2284
63. Mr. COCKS

asked the Secretary for Mines the average annual earnings of the mine workers in Great Britain in 1930?

Mr. SHINWELL

The average cash earnings of all workers employed in the coal mines in Great Britain during the year 1930 was £113 18s. 2d. In addition, there were allowances in kind, varying in annual value from about 12s. in Scotland, Lancashire and Cheshire, and North Staffordshire, to about £14 in Northumberland and Durham, with an average over the whole country of £4 17s. 4d.

Mr. COCKS

Is that not a disgracefully low rate of wages for a basic industry of this country?
