HC Deb 27 July 1931 vol 255 c1948
68. Sir N. G RATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider legislation to amend the proceedings in magistrates' courts so as to provide that all evidence in cases of alleged murder, manslaughter, and criminal assault shall be taken in camera in such courts?

Mr. SHORT

In the view of my right hon. Friend the proceedings should be public, and in the circumstances he does not see his way to introduce legislation in the sense suggested.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

Does the hon. Gentleman not think there are exceptional cases that should not be taken in public?

Mr. SHORT

That is a matter of opinion.
