56. Sir K. WOOD

asked the Minister of Health whether there is any sum in hand of the £440,000 allotted to necessi- tous areas in England and Wales except such amount as has been kept for engineering contingencies?

Mr. GREENWOOD

No sum is in hand beyond that reserved for engineering contingencies.

57. Sir K. WOOD

asked the Minister of Health whether he proposes to give any special assistance during the coming winter to necessitous areas; and whether he can state the reply he has given to representations in relation thereto to the South Wales (Monmouthshire) Necessitous Areas Conference?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I am not in a position to make a statement on this subject at the present time. I informed the deputation which attended recently from the body mentioned in the question that I would bring their representations to the notice of the Government.

Does the right hon. Gentleman propose to make any statement before the summer Recess?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I cannot make any promise.
