HC Deb 22 July 1931 vol 255 cc1473-4
20. Mr. PHILIP OLIVER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the total amount of pay due to deceased or untraced native soldiers and labourers who served in East Africa during the War; whether this money has been placed on deposit; and whether it is proposed to devote these funds to some purpose of native welfare?

Dr. SHIELS

On the conclusion of the East African campaign, there were certain balances standing in the names of native carriers which remained unclaimed. For various reasons, it was not clear what was the total amount actually due, but endeavours were made to establish the rights of the claimants, and up to 31st March of this year payment has been made to all who could establish their claim. No money from this account is held in suspense.
