HC Deb 22 July 1931 vol 255 c1471
9. Sir C. CAYZER

(for Rear-Admiral BEAMISH) asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether creosote oil from British coal is now being purchased and used regularly for the Fleet; if it is intended to extent its use; and further whether any technical difficulties have arisen regarding it qualities?

The CIVIL LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. G. H. Hall)

Creosote is not regularly used in the Fleet, but occasional purchases have been made. It is unlikely that its use will be greatly extended owing to its many disadvantages as compared with petroleum oil fuel. Owing to technical difficulties, it can only be used as fuel in His Majesty's ships when mixed with a much larger bulk of petroleum oil fuel.
