HC Deb 20 July 1931 vol 255 cc1051-2
38. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether the additional officer with the rank of Consul who is detailed to the offices of the Consul-General at San Francisco has forwarded to him any reports as to present commercial prospects in the Western States, United States of America; and can he state whether any further increase in commercial representation in the Western States is at present contemplated?

Mr. GILLETT (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

In addition to normal routine reports furnished in reply to inquiries from the Department of Overseas Trade or from British firms, His Majesty's Consul at San Francisco has forwarded a number of detailed reports relating to possible openings for various classes of British products on the Pacific coast of the United States of America. As regards the last part of the question, I am asking the newly appointed Commercial Counsellor at Washington to let me have a considered report when he has had time to review the existing organisation.

Mr. DAY

Is the hon. Gentleman satisfied with the new arrangement in San Francisco?

Mr. GILLETT

I do not know to what the hon. Member is referring.

Mr. DAY

I am referring to the new appointment of this consul who is doing commercial work.

Mr. GILLETT

The whole position will be considered when I get the report of the commercial counsellor at Washington.
