HC Deb 20 July 1931 vol 255 cc1048-9
31. Mr. CAMPBELL

(for Mr. HANNON) asked the Secretary of State for India in view of the practice which has developed in India on a large scale during recent years and which consists in passing off goods of German and Japanese origin as of British manufacture, and the fact that bicycle parts and accessories made in Japan are sold under well-known names which are the registered property of British manufacturers, if he will make representations to the Government of India on this subject?

13. Major BEAUMONT THOMAS

asked the Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been drawn to the practice by Indian importers of using the names of English manufacturers to advertise Japanese cycles and cycle parts; and if the Government of India proposes to take steps with a view to protecting English manufacturers against this practice?

Mr. WHITELEY

My right hon. Friend has received representations on this subject from the British Cycle and Motor Cycle Manufacturers' and Traders' Union, and he is sending the hon. Member for Moseley (Mr. Hannon) and the hon. and gallant Member for King's Norton (Major Thomas) a copy of the reply that has been sent to the union.

Mr. CAMPBELL

Will the hon. Gentleman do his utmost, with the Secretary of State for India, to protect these British industries in the interest of the Indians themselves, who otherwise buy these cheap and bad foreign goods?

Mr. WHITELEY

The hon. Member had better wait until he receives the reply.
