HC Deb 16 July 1931 vol 255 c744
14. Major COLVILLE

asked the Minister of Labour the number of workers in the coal-mining industry registered as unemployed on 1st June, 1929, and at the latest available date?

Miss BONDFIELD

At 27th May, 1929, there were 199,163 insured persons in the coal-mining industry classification recorded as unemployed in Great Britain. The corresponding figure at 22nd June, 1931, was 378,633.

Major COLVILLE

In view of the very grave increase in the unemployment figures in the coal-mining industry since the present Government took office, will the right hon. Lady assure us that she will use her influence to see that the miners of Scotland are not stopped working at the present time?
