HC Deb 15 July 1931 vol 255 c437
20. Mr. McSHANE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies the reasons for the proposed abandonment of the recent survey and registration in Cyprus; the cost of that survey and registration; whether it is proposed to begin another survey and registration of the island; and, if so, what is the estimated cost?

Dr. SHIELS

I presume that my hon. Friend refers to the proposed Geological Survey of the Island. The estimated cost, spread over five years, was between £30,000 and £40,000. The Government of Cyprus felt itself unable, in view of the existing financial stringency, to contemplate the adoption of proposals involving such a considerable expenditure. The Director of Land Registration and Surveys is at present engaged on preparation of the arrangements for undertaking a topographical survey. I am not at present able to estimate the cost of such a survey.
